The Power of Our Words
By Gerald Munroe

Do you remember how the world was formed? God spoke the world into existence. God used His Word. He said let there be light and there was light. He said let the water under the sky be gathered up to one place and let dry ground appear. And He called the dry ground land. He spoke everything else into existence and when He saw it was good, He made man in His own image and likeness and gave man dominion over the whole earth. Sadly, man gave up that authority to the devil when he sinned against God.

Nevertheless, we as human beings are made in the likeness of God and our words also have supernatural power. For example, the Bible says in Proverbs 18:21 "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit". Matt 12:36 Jesus said, "But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment."Mark 11:23 "For assuredly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says."

Proverbs 13:3 “Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life, he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.  James 3:8-10 “But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. ”

If you are familiar with the term “goat mouth”, well many years ago I used to beg my wife to stay quiet, because anything she said in a negative context, would come to pass. I could swear she had “goat mouth”. I didn’t know about the power of our words, but God revealed it to me by the memorable account of the birth of John the Baptist. Remember, the miracle birth of John the Baptist? Elizabeth, his mother, was barren and both she and her husband, Zechariah, were considered too old to have children. Zechariah began to doubt the Angel Gabriel, who brought the message to him that Elizabeth was going to have a son. The Angel Gabriel had to make Zechariah dumb until John was born, so that he would not say anything negative about the situation, to upset the plans of God.

Most of us are not aware of the power of our words and a lot of times, we speak things over our lives that could bring a blessing or a curse upon ourselves and even our loved ones. I will give you a personal example with my family. I used to call my wife clumsy because she accidentally broke glasses in the kitchen on a weekly basis. The more I quarreled with her and called her clumsy the more wares she broke. She was not doing it intentionally and I believe that she was trying her best to be careful, but little did I know that my words were affecting her life and causing her to be clumsy. It is only after I started my relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, I became conscious that our words have power in them. I needed to change the way I speak and instead of saying negative things, I would now try speaking positively about people and situations. I began proclaiming that she is not clumsy in the name of Jesus and now, I cannot remember the last time she broke anything. Thank God. If I have nothing positive to say, I am learning to just keep my mouth shut, because my words could unintentionally curse someone.

I recently heard a man say that he was going to several doctors and they could not find out what was wrong with him. All he knows is that he is not felling well and he could not sleep at nights, which made him very irritable. This man has been a Christian for over twenty years. He knows that Jesus can heal him and he continues to pray fervently for his healing. However, his words to me were “I have chronic insomnia and it is getting worse, I feel awful and I know that God can heal me if He wanted to, but maybe I just have to live with this”. His negative words are causing a hindrance to him receiving his healing. The Word of God says that Jesus came and bore our sicknesses and pain for us and by His wounds we are healed. Don’t just think it in your mind, declare it with your mouth “By His wounds I am healed!” Remember, our words have supernatural power. Even our idle words, so we need to be very cautious of what we are going to say. Matt 12:37 "For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."
